A coming-of-age story like you’ve never seen before! After clearing up as an audience favourite on the global festival circuit, Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker finally arrives in UK cinemas this February, courtesy of Matchbox Cine.
The definition of a cult film, Drew’s astute parody of DC comics lore and its various filmic iterations bursts the bubble of a male-dominated industry of stardom. Set in a distorted version of Gotham City, where comedy has been outlawed and its billionaire caped crusader is instead a fascist villain, The People’s Joker is a love letter to the community of outsiders, rebels, and self-proclaimed weirdos, yearning for success and happiness in an otherwise scary world.
A mishmash of psychedelic visuals, comedy, drama, action, animation, and t4t romance, starring Drew as the eponymous Joker, with Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, Nebraska) and Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric, Us) in supporting roles.
The People’s Joker must be seen to be believed.
This is a descriptive subtitle screening.
