Kinuyo Tanaka (Forever a Woman, Equinox Flower), one of Japan’s greatest actresses, stars in The Life of Oharu by Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff), one of Japan’s greatest directors.
Amongst the most highly regarded films of Mizoguchi’s late career run of masterpieces, The Life of Oharu is adapted from Ihara Saikaku’s Edo period work The Life of an Amorous Woman. Tracing Oharu’s fall from noblewoman to prostitute, beginning after a forbidden love affair with a page, Kinuyo Tanaka gives an iconic performance before Mizoguchi’s morally exacting gaze, which uncompromisingly registered the plight of women in feudal and modern Japan.
"One of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Kenji Mizoguchi was the equal of a Murnau or a Rossellini... If poetry appears at every second, in every shot that Mizoguchi makes, it is because, as with Murnau, it is the instinctive reflection of the inventive nobility of its author."
--Jean-Luc Godard
