FAM FILMS COMMUNITY PRESENTS

Sound System Rooted in Bristol

Director: Steve McQueen, 2020, 68 minutes, UK, Cert 12A

-
Thu 5 October 2023 // 18:30

Tickets: £5

Bristol’s earliest sound systems began mainly at house parties known as ‘blues’ in St Pauls and Easton and this was a chance for the West Indian community to come together and dance in their own authentic way. Back then an amp, a turntable, some choice tunes and some ‘big off’ speakers would be enough to rock a house party!

Come join us as we reminisce at the Cube Cinema with reggae and lovers rock tunes, some patties, optional rum punch and stories about the Bristol sound system from people in the know.

A talk about the Bristol sound system scene and a Q&A will be followed by free screening of the Lover’s Rock Film directed by Steve McQueen.

Please note this is the first event held by FAM Films Community CIC.  The aim of the company is to grow a Black film festival that’s run like the MOBO awards with red carpet events and award ceremonies held here in Bristol for the world to see, but we are starting small, and we appreciate that you have come to this very first event.  If we sell out, we will only just cover costs, such as food, event hire, and getting the digital cinema package (DCP) in order to play Lovers Rock film, so if you are able to give a little extra FAM Films Community CIC can continue to grow for the benefit of the community and will make the Black Film Festival happen.
