The second film this year from the seemingly unstoppable Luca Guadagnino, Queer is based on William Burrough's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, as well as incorporating elements of his correspondence with Allan Ginsberg concerning the drug Yage.
The film follows Burroughs stand-in William Lee (another sterling performance from Bond-bod Daniel Craig) on a search for, first, love on the streets of 1950s Mexico City and, then, telepathic enlightenment in the depths of the Amazon rainforest.
Drifting from a sharply observed realism, into a hallucinogenic finale, Guadagnino has described the film as his tribute to Powell and Pressburger, claiming that they'd have appreciated his 'numerous and scandalous' sex scenes. Director John Waters is certainly a fan, ranking it as his second favourite film of 2024. It also boasts terrific performances from Jason Schwartzman and Lesley Manville, as well as a banging soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails collaborators Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
"Oh, if today’s homos were this radical, I’d be a much happier queer myself." - John Waters
