Ovarian Psycos

Dir: Joanna Sokolowski, Kate Trumbull-LaValle, USA, 2016, 72 mins, Cert 18 (ctba)

Ovarian Psycos is about a new generation of fierce, unapologetic and feminist women of color from the Eastside of Los Angeles who confront injustice, build community, and redefine identity through The Ovarian Psycos Cycle Brigade.

Through the personal stories of the crew’s founder, Xela de la X, activist, poet M.C., and single mother; street artist and original Ovarian Psyco, Andi Xoch; and a bright-eyed young woman from the neighborhood, Evelyn (Evie), the film traces how the “Ovas” emerged from the diverse, youthful, Latino, working class, immigrant neighborhoods of Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles, a community situated within the historic legacy of the Chicano/a Civil Rights Movement that emerged from L.A. in the late 1960s.

For members Andi and Evelyn, the Ovas speak to the broken, to the uneducated, and to those who live the hard life. Meanwhile, the pressure to raise a young daughter by herself ultimately puts Xela at a crossroads with her own role in the Ovas. But through all the obstacles they invariably face, the group as a whole becomes a rising force, as these young women continue to call out to new riders to join them on their journey: “Whose streets? Our streets!”

Divided

Dir: Lee Craigie, Rickie Cotter, UK, 2018, 39 mins, Cert 18 (ctba)

Fear of failure can stop all sorts of adventures before they even start. But what if failing is the best part? In 2017, Rickie Cotter and Lee Craigie rode the Tour Divide, the iconic 2,745 mile self-supported mountain bike race from Canada to Antelope Wells at the Mexican border. Along the way, the two captured the journey using only a Go Pro and an iPhone. During the trip, they simply let the story unfold. The result is an inspiring film that was selected to tour with the Banff Film Festival.

As part of The Adventure Syndicate — a non-profit collective of female endurance cyclist — the two hope their story inspires and encourages others to set out on their own adventure.

About Lunar Cycles

Inspired by Ovarian Psycos, Lunar Cycles is a free Bristol cycle club for those identifying as women, non-binary and transgender. It provides a safe, friendly and inclusive space, and increases visibility of this population in cycling and public space in general. It is an alternative to male-dominated, elitist clubs, and fills a gap between beginner rides and very fast, male-dominated rides.

The club aims so increase access to cycling among the target population, create a network of cyclists within this demographic, increase =access natural spaces, and address the challenge of lack of public transport.

Many rides and tours done by women are not documented or not given as much publicity as those undertaken by cis men, perpetuating the myth that men are the pioneers of cycling adventures. Lunar Cycles wanted to challenge this, by organising screenings of the above documentaries with Cube, which highlight the achievements and strength (emotional as well as physical) of women, trans and non-binary cyclists, and to provide a platform for women/GNC folk in leading cycling initiatives in Bristol.
