Robert Eggers’ remake of Nosferatu is a brilliantly brooding 21st Century ‘glow-up’ of Murnau’s silent original, skillfully blending the horror atmospherics of The Witch with the mythic scope of The Northman.
Largely preserving the narrative drive of the 1922 classic - with a few sly twists thrown in to freshen things up - the film is a neat psycho-sexual spin on the well-known Stoker story, dished up alongside a healthy portion of 21st century horror thrills. Bill Skarsgard’s Count Orlock eschews the 'Carpathian ladykiller' cliche of yore, essaying, instead, a truly monstrous blood-sucking fiend with a hipster moustache from hell - plausibly leaving Nicholas Hoult’s hapless estate agent quaking in his boots, and Lily-Rose Depp's curiously complex heroine quaking in all other manner of ways.
And for those of you were fond of his lighthouse, Eggars alumnus Willem Dafoe will delight as a the cat-loving vampire hunter with a pocket full of Dreamies always at hand for his feline friends.
