Bfi Jane Arden And Jack Bond Season: Separation

In a major coup for The Cube, we are picking up the National Film Theatre’s short season of the films of the radical feminist writer and director Jane Arden (1927-82). Her three features, made with the producer-director Jack Bond, virtually unseen for over 25 years, have been restored and reissued by the British Film Institute. The Cube season coincides with their release on DVD and blue ray.
SEPARATION
(Jack Bond /1968 / 93 minutes / UK)
Jane Arden plays the central role in her screenplay about a woman drifting away from her husband (played by the great David de Keyser) in search of new ideas and greater fulfilment. The film’s mosaic style - which predicts the work of Donald Cammell and Nicholas Roeg - explores her inner and outer worlds as reality and fantasy become increasingly blurred. An original film which shows the influence of modern innovators like Godard and, in improvised sequences, Cassavetes, ‘Separation’is now restored to its rightful place as an important contribution to cinema’s exploration of 1960’s London and the changing attitudes and lifestyles of that time. In black and white and colour. Music by Procul Harum and Matthew Fisher.
