The Cube is thrilled to bits to be able to bring you this gay ‘pinku eiga’ (Japanese ‘pink film’, a term used to indicate explicit erotic content) satirising the 1970 ‘Mishima Incident’, where the celebrated author attempted to stage a coup d’detat with his own private militia, before committing ritual suicide.
Throwing reverence and political correctness aside with gleeful abandon, the film follows two hapless bodybuilders recruited by a Mishima-like figure to participate in his private army. Training weekends become orgies, and rehearsals for the notorious incident result in highly stylised sexual tableau, charged with erotic symbolism.
In tone the film lies somewhere between ‘Bottom’ and 70s sex comedies like the ‘Confessions…’ series, but somewhere beneath the surface smut-and-bawd lies an interesting exploration of what made Mishima such a compelling and divisive figure in Japan, both in life and in death.
