Maysaloun Hamoud's elegant and sensitive story of three Palestinian women trying to find their way in Tel Aviv is a beautifully acted film on the pressures of living in a patriarchal society.
Laila and Salma work hard and play hard, filling their free time with dancing, drinking and DJing, but feel their style is cramped when quiet, studious Nour comes to stay with them. Each of them is looking for love but, as young Palestinian women, finding a relationship on their own terms is difficult. However, it's this common ground that brings them together in this début tour-de-force.
In Between has been rapturously received, with Hamoud receiving the Women in Motion Young Talents award at this year’s Cannes festival. Isabelle Huppert, who selected her for the award, declared that “the free spirited and joyful women [Hamoud] portrays… are true heroines of our time”
