Sunao Katabuchi's (Mai Mai Miracle, Princess Arete) introspective, beautifully-drawn animation depicts the incredible horror of Hiroshima via the coming-of-age story of a young girl, showing with great emotional impact the full extent of what was lost.
Japan, 1933: Suzu lives in a port town with her family, running errands and enjoying the simplicity and innocence of childhood. But in 1944 things are very different: now 18 in the midst of war, Suzu moves near Hiroshima to be married, aiding the war effort and supporting her new relations, until in 1945 the US raids begin - leading to the historic atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed 129,000, devastated the country and changed the course of the war.
A beautiful and tragic tale, In This Corner of the World explores the profound personal losses caused by history's most violent acts; alongside the truth that even in the face of immense adversity and loss, people may come together to rebuild their lives.
"A dream-like portrait of what was lost in the battle of Hiroshima" **** Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
