In a remote, seaside village in northern Turkey, five orphaned sisters frolic boisterously with their male classmates on the way home from school, buoyed by the end of term and the prospect of summer break. Their innocent physical play catches the eye of a disapproving villager who swiftly informs the girls' caretaker grandmother and domineering uncle. Panic and hysteria quickly set in as the adults take draconian steps to safeguard the girls' virtue and marriage prospects.

Shot in a naturalistic style and winning the Cannes Directors' Fortnight Europa Cinemas Prize this is an incredible debut feature by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, who confronts the weight of an oppressive society with moments of hope, humour and the bond of sisterhood.

All the performances here are astonishing, not least Günes Sensoy as the youngest sister Lale, who powers the story. And, there's a brilliant soundtrack from Warren Ellis. An extraordinary film.

"The Virgin Suicides in Anatolia is a sweet, sad Turkish delight" - Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian ****

"While many Turks will find the final salvation distinctly inorganic, few can argue with the directors talent or that of her exceptionally fine, largely unknown cast of young women." - Jay Weissberg, Variety

"Mustang is full of life even as it depicts lives in lockdown." - Nicolas Rapold, New York Times

"The undoubted star is Günes Sensoy, who plays Lale, the youngest and the fiercest of the sisters, and the only one who puts their hopes of resistance into effect." - Anthony Lane, The New Yorker
