A Film and Social Evening presented by Space Invader Films
(Sun 27th / 7.30pm / £3 - though no one turned away through lack of funds)
Free open spaces are rapidly disappearing as developers step up the race to build on any available land. The urban landscape is increasingly being covered by luxury flats, shopping centres, car parks and fences, where once there was common land used by communities for free recreation.
Tonight we show the different ways people are fighting back and defending what is rightfully theirs. In PLAYING ABOUT WITH THE COMMONS, one man fights to save common land from being turned into a golf course. REACH FOR THE SKY shows how a community resisted the planned expansion of Swansea Airport. Plus there is the premiere of INFINITE SPACE, a documentary made by local campaigners about the battle to save Packers Field in Whitehall from development by Bristol City Council and the City Academy.
There will also be music and plenty of opportunity to discuss the issues in the bar afterwards.
