Ben Wheatley’s eagerly anticipated adaptation of J G Ballard’s 1975 novel about the total breakdown of a class hierarchy, set within the confines of a 40-storey brutalist beauty, pulls off the dystopian madness with imaginative style.
The Elysium Tower is the glistening height of modern living, and its residents know their places – strictly from top to bottom. But as the class walls quickly disintegrate, characterised by ever-wilder and violent behaviour and increasingly decadent and hedonistic partying, so too does the fabric of the building itself. The action speeds up and the barriers come down, resulting in a note of classic British surrealism.
"A multi-level blueprint of the UK’s class politics, exposing the delirious ruins of Thatcher’s utopian enterprise." ★★★★ Little White Lies
"It’s the social-surrealist film of the year" ★★★★ Guardian
