Award-winning folk & live electronics duo Solarference (Nick Janaway and Sarah Owen) will be recording their new album Locks and Bolts in front of a live audience. For this album, Solarference have gathered and recomposed ten traditional songs, exploring stories of freedom and constraint, imprisonment and liberation.
Singers and sound artists Nick and Sarah perform a genre-defying mix of live sampling and traditional folk song, with voice at the heart of the music. From laptops running their self-designed, ‘home-made’ sound software, the duo explores and transforms a range of sounds from bike bells to sellotape, alongside live instruments. Every sonic detail of a Solarference performance is created live as Nick and Sarah improvise and respond together to weave layers of sound and song.
“Simply genius ... It's like the ghost of a voice singing down the ages, dropped into a pool of Wicker-Man-ish, spooked folkstrel clamour” - fRoots magazine
“A crystallization of ancient and modern, as circuit boards sing with the art of storytelling...Totally intoxicating” - SpiralEarth
“Treading their own path from day one, and inventiveness is certainly at the top of the description... the audience were so enthralled.” - Folk radio UK
Solarference have been developing their unique approach to fusing folk and electronics since 2008. Their first album, Lips of Clay, was released in late 2012 to critical acclaim. In early 2014 they completed a regional tour of a live soundtrack piece for the 1920 silent film "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Nick and Sarah welcome audiences to this live recording show, to be part of this new adventure for Solarference, plus to hear some brand new material for the first time in Bristol.
