Cathy Whitaker, an upper-middle-class housewife in 1950s suburban Connecticut, seems to be living the picture-postcard American life - married to a high-flying businessman, mother to two loving children and a prominent fixture on the local social circuit - but a chance discovery about her husband, coupled with her burgeoning friendship with a local black gardener, both threaten to cause scandal in the repressive conservative milieu of the time. Uncanny in its radiantly beautiful visual evocation of the age of Technicolor movie making, Todd Haynes' (Velvet Goldmine, I'm Not There, and the upcoming Carol) film serves as an elegant homage to - and a thematic deepening of - the melodramas of Douglas Sirk, headed by an extraordinary career-best lead performance by Julianne Moore.
