Straight from the heart of Studio Ghibli co-founder and master animator, Isao Takahata, comes a beautifully drawn and heartwarming story about a young sprite's journey from earth to aristocracy. Based on a 10th Century Japanese fable, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is as joyful and divine as the setting sun.
On his usual rounds, a bamboo cutter one day comes across a tiny girl glowing inside a bamboo shoot. Recognising the nature of the blessing, he takes her home and raises her as if she were his own. But, unlike the other children in the village, the tiny girl grows fast and soon becomes the most beautiful woman in all the land. Certain that she is divined to earth, the humble bamboo cutter sets upon constructing a new, royal life for her, complete with riches and rules.
Concerned with many of the same issues we see across Studio Ghibli films; including the binary tensions between law and land, rich and poor, feudal and rural, love and responsibility; The Tale of Princess Kaguya is another stunning work of art and entertainment. Absolutely suitable for viewers of all ages, Kaguya will take your heart and fill it with riches that exceed the imagination and that are certainly not of this world.
Feminist, environmental, thoughtful, generous and exquisitely drawn, in a style that recalls washed-out Japanese watercolours, Kaguya is another Studio Ghibli must see.
