Said to be a favourite of Luis Buñuel, The Saragossa Manuscript is a brilliant examination of the supernatural and the mystical. Set in 1739, it sees young Spanish captain Alfons van Worden (Zbigniew Cybulski) crossing the Sierra Morena, entrusted with several important missions and embarking on a series of wild encounters, each stranger than the last.
Skilfully adapted from Jan Potocki's 1813 novel, this elegant widescreen work faithfully reproduces the intricate Chinesebox 'tale-within-a-tale' structure of the book - to the point where neither audience nor characters can ever be sure where reality meets literature.
