Winner of the Golden Lion at 2014's Venice Film Festival and the final instalment in a trilogy “about being a human being”,  A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence is a high concept, absurdist study of human interaction.

Always observing, through windows and doorways, Roy Andersson captures the tragi-comic nature of our deepest existential questions. As war stomps into town others sit idly by, lovers spat and loved ones die, yet even so a duo of inept door-to-door salesmen attempt to (unsuccessfully) promote their novelty wears all the while.

Failure, death and grief are always lurking just around the corner, but there's still time to smile and enjoy it all - if only we'd stop being so bloomin' beige...

Featuring his off-kilter black humour and his trademark tableaux compositions, the film, inspired by Bruegel's painting 'Hunters in the Snow' and Dostoevsky, looks at the tragic consequences of being and questions, given man's inhumanity, what hope there is for our continuing existence.

Comparisons with Bergman and Fellini seem inevitable for a film that blends visual fantasy, deadpan comedy and existential angst into a statement on the struggle to be human.

Screening alongside the feature will be a collection of Andersson's commercials featuring his trademark humour and advertise a range of products including cheese, car insurance and the Swedish Social Democratic party.

"What an incredible film-maker Andersson is – he has created an entirely unique epic movie-cycle that has to be seen to be believed" ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw The Guardian

"It’s about doom and death and the ineffable weirdness of the human experience, and it made me laugh until I wept... It’s heaven." ★★★★★ Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

"Just see it, OK?" ★★★★★ David Ehrlich  Little White Lies
