Canadian wunderkind Xavier Dolan may have only just turned 26, but he’s already made a name for himself as a fascinating and incendiary film maker. We adored last year's Tom at the Farm and we’re excited to now be able to screen his fifth (and perhaps his best) feature "Mommy" at the Cube.
In a near-future Quebecois suburb, Diane is a feisty 50-something widow in stripper heels and sprayed-on jeans. Her troubled teenage son Steve is expelled into his mother’s custody from a care facility over his violent outbursts. While mother and son attempt to negotiate their volatile but deeply heartfelt relationship, they attract the attention of Kyla, an introverted neighbour who inserts herself into the household and provides much-needed support. These three characters are masterfully brought to life by, Dolan mainstays, Anne Dorval and Suzanne Clément with a breakthrough performance by Antoine-Olivier Pilon.
The film is shot in a selfie-like 1:1 aspect ratio which draws viewers right to the centre of the threesome's intimate and explosive dynamic and is backed by a killer ’90s pop soundtrack.
Audacious and inspiring, this is one of the best films of the year which deservedly won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2014.
"outrageous and brilliant, a daytime soap from hell" ★★★★★ Peter Bradshaw Guardian
"Arguably the best mother-son film since psycho" ★★★★★ David Ehrlich Little White Lies
