Before Manhunter, Heat and Collateral there was Thief, Michael Mann's masterful début feature which announced the arrival of a major new American film maker. In perhaps his greatest screen performance, James Caan stars as Frank, an accomplished jewel thief taking on one last big score to enable himself to go straight. Bearing all of Mann's characteristic meticulousness and visual elegance, and with superb support from Tuesday Weld and Willie Nelson, this ice-cool neo-noir remains the blueprint for the director's own work, and a significant precursor of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive.
