May’s Hellfire celebrates the work of one the world’s finest living thespians, and Canada’s greatest export…the inimitable William Shatner. After the demise of Star Trek, Shat appeared in some wonderful 1970s genre movies. Tonight we screen two of the best.

Our main feature is 1977’s’ Kingdom of the Spiders’ in which Bill fights an infestation of killer arachnids. Seeing Shat act while covered in dozens of tarantulas is worth the admission price alone.

He plays an Arizona vet who takes a blood sample from a dead cow, only to find it was killed by spider venom. An expert entomologist arrives, played by cult film siren Tiffany Bolling. Around the farm they discover thousands of tarantulas communally living in hill colonies.

Not just a cheap B-movie creature feature, the film also has an important ecological message. The entomologist concludes that human use of pesticides has killed off the spiders’ natural prey, so they’ve adapted to live and hunt together for new mammalian prey…including us!

Hang around! Our second film is equally entertaining, as Shat battles a group of Satanists and ‘Old Nick’ himself.

In the bar Hellfire DJs will be playing psychedelic B-movie sounds.
