The second of our ‘future visions’ events looks at the work of author J.G Ballard, whose unique vision managed to become synonymous with a very particular type of dystopian modernity. Where others looked outward to the stars, Ballard looked inward, to the post war surroundings of the 20th century, and made us view the industrial zones and bleakly beautiful man-made landscapes that sprung up in its wake in a different light forever more.
For such an influential figure, Ballard’s work has seen comparatively little in the way of moving image adaptation, either in TV or film. As we await with baited breath Ben Wheatley’s forthcoming adaptation of his classic novel or urban alienation ‘High Rise’, we take a look outside of the UK, to focus on the work of Swedish born filmmaker Solvieg Nordlund.
Tonight’s main feature is her little seen Portuguese shot feature adaptation of ‘Low Flying Aircraft’ (aka Aparelho Voador a Baixa Altitude, 2002). Set in a near future where humans are a dying breed, Judite and André flee to a semi-abandoned apartment complex to protect their unborn child from the certain death that would befall a mutant ‘zote’, the common result of a natural pregnancy. Nordlund’s film captures the essence of Ballard’s short story, whilst bringing a distinctively female perspective to the source material. Vividly capturing the distinctive landscapes of the Ballardian vision via her ingenious use of an abandoned holiday complex.
Plus short film ‘Journey to Orion’, Ballard Interview, installation, Ballardian DJ set and further surprises.
** Advance tickets are available to purchase on-line until 4 hours before the start of the film. If advance tickets are "sold out" please note that we always keep back 20 tickets to sell on the door. Early arrival is advised, the doors open 30 mins before the film starts.
