Twenty one countries. Twenty one visions. One Sea.
Say the words "The Mediterranean" to many Britons and they think of a good time: Sun, Sea, a little wine (or a lot). But nice as that is, the countries of the Mediterranean are more than nice places to relax. They are a diverse collection of nations ranging from Spain in the west to Turkey and Greece in the East; from France and Italy in the North to Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt in the south. An area of the world that is both the cradle of ancient civilisations and a modern, diverse place currently going through economic, political and cultural upheavals.
We will show more than 20 short films from the people and cultures of the Mediterranean Sea, places like Turkey, Italy, Tunisia, Spain, Egypt and others. The program will give the audience an opportunity to delight in some internationally-recognised films from the region, providing a diverse selection of genres and themes. From drama and comedy to animation and experimental films, covering a panoply of social, political and historical circumstances. The audience will be able to not only enjoy the cinema, but also get a wider vision of the Mediterranean, in all its geographic and cultural variety.
The Bristolian Mediterranean Short Film Festival aims to help the exchange of cultural and social ideas, through relevant topics and stories, to promote artistic and intellectual collaboration between the different Mediterranean countries and the people of Bristol.
The aim of the festival is to increase the access to and visibility of the cinema coming from the Mediterranean countries: to expand the audience of these films and introduce new talents. We hope in the future, it will help establish links between the cinema of these countries and the city of Bristol.
As well as the short film program we will be providing a tasting menu of the Mediterranean, thanks to the generous support of The Real Olive Co and Eat-A-Pitta. There will be a selection of typical local products and drinks, with music in the bar providing the perfect excuse to celebrate the culture of the Mediterranean, and maybe learn some new dance moves!
You can find more details of the festival programme on our website (www.bmsff.eu) or via our Facebook page.
There will be an important element of participation from the audience too. We want to offer some form of thanks to all the creators who have placed their trust in this festival, and did not hesitate to give us their short films for exhibition. So, you will be able to vote for your favourite film from the festival, and the film you choose will win the director £200!
