STRANGE THAN FICTION: THE FILMS OF JEAN PAINLEVE
Pioneering scientist, documentarist, self-declared anarchist and scuba-auteur Jean Painleve made a series of rapturous underwater films in the 1920s and 30s, exploring undersea and microscopic worlds.
Painleve found the work sometimes trying "but there are consolations: the greatest being the ability to eat one's actors--crab, shrimp, sea urchins, squid, all finely cooked in new and unusual ways."
Tonight we screen submarine surrealist shorts including The Sea Horse, Sea Urchins, How some Jellyfish are born, & Lovelife of the Octopus. Bring your own chips.
