TOUCHING THE VOID
(Kevin Macdonald / 2003 / 106mins / cert 15)
(Fri 5th - Thurs 11th (not Tues)/ various times / £4/3)

The first true must-see of the millenium, this drama-documentary is an account of the ascent in 1985 of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes by two young, ambitious but inexperienced climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. It is a compelling mix of dramatic reconstructions and candid present day recollections by the two climbers and Richard Hawking who stayed at the base camp. After an accident the two climbers are seperated and have very different journeys down the mountain, being both mentally and physically overwelmed by the punishing terrain.

The filmmaker Macdonald won an Oscar for his documentary ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER. With Touching the Void he puts the viewer right there with the climbers using edge of the seat camerawork conveying the vast force of rock, snow and ice that frames this epic human story of despair and survival.
