The SK Lectures
(Thur 29th/8pm/£5/£4)
Tonight the Cube presents the The SK lectures, an on-going investigation into the lesser known history of radio and related subjects. With films, stills, live music, and spoken word this promises to be a real audio and visual treat.
Starting in the sprawling new suburban housing projects built in America during the 1950s, and ending in the unexplored depths of the cosmos,
'Welcome to Mars' investigates the projection of human consciousness into outer space. Drawing on a wide range of sources and material, acclaimed writer Ken Hollings traces the development of simulated environments, from the technology of easy listening through early accounts of alien abductions, to the interactive sensory assault of the videogame. Accompanying him will be radio producer Simon James, presenting a live simultaneous mix of sound and visuals, including a reconstruction of their recent radio piece: 'Space Music: Things Seen in the Skies'.
Writer / Performer David Ellis accompanied by Jo Thomas composer of
electro-accoustic music will present an illustrated performed lecture based on the BBc Radio 3 show 'Slient Key'. 'Silent Key' described by David Ellis as ' an audio field-diary investigation into a lesser known history of radio', is an assemblage of interviews, composed electro-accoustic music, spheric utterances and thrummings recorded whilst travelling through the UK, India and Lithuania in search of the 'electronic shards' of the SK of the title Arthur Triggle who had operated from 1957 until his death in 1997.
The SK lecture itself consists of the'live' rejigging of raw unedited material and specially composed music by Jo Thomas, with David drawing on his workbooks/ journals written whilst 'in-the-feild'.
