This latest mixing of low-key domescity with ghostly doom performs the ratchet-release-repeat trick with such metronomic efficiency that it gathers the force of a hallucinatory incantation. The Grudge is an exercise in reiteration and disjunction that provocatively does away with plot, exposition, character development, and connective tissue.
