THE ATLANTIC (ATLANTEN)(Jan Roed/ Sweden/ 1995/ 76 min/Distr. SFI/Cert: PG)
This is a film about islands, islanders and their histories. It is also about a trip from Iceland in the north, to South Georgia in the south. On our way there we pass The Azores, Cap Verde, Saint Helena and Staten Island. In the words of the narrator: "I'm always looking for the perfect picture, place or person that can symbolise everything I have ever lost in my life. I want to find perfection and then leave. This film concerns islands in the Atlantic, but there is an underlying message: the passage from birth to death, from the origin of the sea to the extinction of mankind."
The Atlantic is a personal account of a journey.
It is a film based on jottings made in pictures, words and sounds. The principal charcter, whom we never see, is our guide throughout the voyage.
