STOKED: THE RISE AND FALL OF GATOR
(Helen Stickler / USA / 2002 / approx 100 mins / cert 15)
(Mon 5th - Tues 6th 7pm / Wed 7th-Thur 8th 9pm / £4/3/2ttt)
This is the gripping account of the life of professional skateboarder Mark 'Gator' Rogowski, whose aggressive style helped to define skate culture of the era. He was a leading figure in the development of 'Vert' ramp skating, and his tear 'n' paste fashion sense provided the inspiration for the Vision Street Wear label. STOKED tracks the history of the sport from the hardcore early
eighties, when local skatepark heroes were transformed into international superstars, many of whom are featured here (including TONY HAWK, STEVE CABALLERO and STACY PERALTA). As the trend switched from ramp to street skating, Gator found himself left high and dry.
Unable to deal with the sense of abandonment by his contemporaries, sponsors and fans, Gator found God but his life was already on a tragectory of tragedy. His story is over when he gives himself up to the cops, having raped and murdered a girl who had known his ex-girlfriend; he is now serving 31 years to
life in prison.
The film is at once a close-up portrait of an ego unable to adapt, and a larger cultural analysis detailing the boom and bust of a subculture.Great/shocking footage and a meaty soundtrack of '80s skate punk classics by: Black Flag, Butthole Surfers and more. The release of STOKED is an overall solid effort from Lions Gate and Palm Pictures.
