BRAINSTORM (1983)
(Douglas Trumbull / USA / 1983 / 106mins / cert 15
(Tue 29th / 8pm / £2ttt)
Combining existential philosophical questions with government duplicity and double-dealing, this pre-cyberpunk 'weird science' forgotten classic chronicles the efforts of a team of scientists who are working on a VCR of the mind -- record and playback of human memory, feelings, and knowledge. Mike Brace (Christopher Walken) and his wife (Natalie Wood) are thrust into a breathless, non-stop race to prevent the machine from falling into the wrong hands and becoming the ultimate government weapon.
Technical credits (including Trumbull's Entertainment Effects Group) are state of the art, Director Trumbull has a very respectable Sci-fi CV having also directed SILENT RUNNING. He worked as special effects supervisor on 2001 and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, as well as the first STAR TREK movie. BRAINSTORM didn't do so well at the box office, having been critisized as being too obscure with a sentimental ending; though, that was never a problem with the audiences of 2001 or ENCOUNTERS?
