ALASDAIR ROBERTS + HEED THE THUNDER
(Sat 14th Feb / 8pm / £6)
A young Scot of great voice arrives with lyrics of myth and legend, tragic ballads and spiritual hymns for the hard working, the outsider and the joyous folk. Were it not for his unknowingness and his unpredictably he may be classed a traditionalist, for he covers and borrows heavily from the great history and imagery of British roots music history (Shirley Collins, Dick Gaugan).
His dolorous and melodic songs, admired by the likes of Will Oldham who indeed first discovered him, were also apparent on his first recordings made with his band Appendix Out, and released with Drag City. His second solo album "Farewell Sorrow" is filled out with guitar picking, glockenspiel, madolin and violin and has been received rapturously.
A captivating performer, the songs can be lusty and upbeat or mournful rolling sparse affairs but always brimming with a sense of history, dread and mirth. Everything needed in an evening of song.
Heed the Thunder, comprising Mat and Alex from Lincoln, will complement with their own impression of indie folk.
