This month HFVC is excited to present a double-bill of films by one of cinema’s unsung underground satirists, Robert Downey Sr. (yep, Jr’s Dad!)
We’re focusing on his early career, and our lead film is the hip and riotous “PUTNEY SWOPE” (1969), a pointed satire of the advertising world that makes “Mad Men” look shit! It follows the African-American takeover of a very white, high-end Madison Avenue Advertising firm, where they begin to push painfully truthful marketing campaigns. Peppered with Technicolor advertising pastiches and possessing a delirious energy, Downey’s irreverent approach here went on to influence many contemporary filmmakers. Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen brothers are noted fans. We’ll follow this with one of his early-70’s films that transposes the gospel story of Jesus to a zonked wild west.
As always HFVC DJ’s will be in the bar playing counter-culture grooves and acid-soaked oddities.
