Based on Jon Savage’s book of the same name, Matt Wolf’s hypnotic
scrapbook-collage documentary Teenage looks to examine the rise of youth culture as a new, distinct and separate identity in the 20th Century. Ending where you might expect to find beginnings, this picture really takes you to the roots – charting a consumer profile formed in the industrial revolution, and that rips through two world wars, taking in the roaring twenties along the way.

Differing from the usual doco-stylings, however, Wolf innovates a radically different format for the material; blending archival artefacts with invented elements, and banishing a single, omnipresent narrator.

Here the history of being teenage feels exciting, revolutionary and provocative – its seething, surreal madness is flexing under the surface, and waiting to spring out...

Matt Wolf joins us from New York after the Sunday screening, via the wonders of the modern world!
