Thet Sambath & Rob Lemkin, 2009, UK/Cambodia, 94,mins

March's regular Monday Indymedia night is also the first event of Bristol Radical Film Festival 2014! You may have seen the Cube's run of The Act of Killing last year; filmmaker Thet Sambath set the precedent for Oppenheimer’s TAOK when he returned to Cambodia from exile in 1998.

For the next decade he interviewed the executioners of Pol Pot’s supposedly communist Khmer Rouge, which slaughtered nearly one third of Cambodia’s population from 1975-1979. Featuring extraordinarily candid interviews with former Khmer Rouge murderers, many of whom acknowledge their crimes for the first time, Enemies of the People is at once cinematically beautiful, chillingly insightful, and as personal as it is political.
