Jessica Pratt is "a young songwriter with a decidedly old soul and a voice that balances spry sweetness with husky grit", said Pitchfork. Pratt’s spooky and seductive self-titled début is the inaugural release on Tim (White Fence) Presley’s new imprint, Birth Records. "I never wanted to start a label", Presley says, "but there is something about her voice I couldn’t let go of."
Pratt's introspective songs of Californian intimacy bring to mind precursors like Karen Dalton, Joni Mitchell, Fred Neil and Linda Perhacs, as well as nearer contemporaries like Joanna Newsom, Espers and Angel Olsen. She's an authentic inheritor of a warm and unfussy folk tradition.
Support comes from Belgium's Fonal-signed Ignatz, whose stripped-down take on American folk and blues styles creates "sparse, emotive songs born of the human condition, wrapped in effects, corroded by tape, driven forth by improvisation and spontaneity".
