From the Wing of a Fly is created from a large body of research undertaken between 2009 and 2010 that included a field trip to North East Turkey during the spring of 2010. My task was to track down the first tulip, still in existence, to be cultivated for human pleasure. The resulting work is made up of two intermingled voiceovers generated from text written in situ, interviews with local people as well as video footage of Istanbul and the area north of Erzurum. It utilises the historical shifts in the cultural and economic importance of the tulip as a backdrop for a narrative work that raises questions about love, place, intervention, economic survival, social responsibility and rural tourism.
