Brand new, long awaited documentary! Tropicalia was the musical movement that encapsulated the electric culture of Brazil in the late sixties. A reaction to the country’s turbulent socio- political history of the era. Using stunning archive footage of legendary charismatic figureheads such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze and others, Machado’s film sweeps the audience along through rare and beautifully utilised footage of the sights and sounds of this iconic cultural movement. The freedom of expression sought by the tropicalistas was hard fought in a repressive political climate, with audiences both for and vehemently against. Tropicalia shows how it was possible for a newborn sound to be both warmly embraced and cruelly persecuted, all in the space of less than a year.

Brought to you, in association with the Hellfire Video Club. Hellfire DJs will be on hand armed with some gloriously fuzzy and sun-kissed Brazilian smashers.

“Tropicália wasn’t a style or a movement as much as an atmosphere, a rush of youthful, cosmopolitan, liberationist optimism that broke over Brazil like a sun shower and soaked into everything: art, music, fashion, film, theater, literature” New York Times

“I dived deep down into the period, giving priority to those who actually photographed, filmed or recorded in 1967, 1968 and 1969... In the spirit of cultural cannibalism, I ate it all up and am giving back this collage in which music is the primary interest and songs are the focus of attention. It is a film to sing-along to." Marcelo Muchado, Director
