(Tues 19 March / 7.30pm doors for 8pm films / £5/4)
(Roland Svoboda & Jörg Stefke / 2011 / EU / 56 mins / German & English with English subtitles)
Left Fields references both a genre and a D.I.Y. state of mind, providing an insight into Europe's alternative hip hop scene. Featuring various concerts, the development of art work and of course the opinions and stories of everyone involved, we take a look at the struggle of independent artists trying to gain ground in the music business. Interviewing MCs, label operators, producers and bookers, Left Fields explores the network of genre-crossing artists such as Ceschi, Noah23, Babel Fishh, Th’ Mole, Gonjasufi, Robot Koch, Comfort Fit, Fulgeance, Oskar Ohlson, who collaborate within networks across Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
In keeping with the worldwide theme of the evening, we will also be screening a short film by Bristol-based filmmaker Aodh Breathnach, exploring the Tunisian hip hop scene, and a documentary by Michael Deet, Hip Hop Resurrection: From NY to NZ, looking at the rise of hip hop in Aotearoa.
