Uprising: Hip Hop & The L.a. Riots With Q&a

-
Wed 13 March 2013 // 20:00

(Wed 13 March / 7.30 doors for 8pm film / £5/4)
(Mark Ford / 2012 / USA / 65 minutes)

Taking a look at the L.A. riots and the impact that rap music had on the events, Snoop Dogg narrates this powerful documentary, taking in interviews with the likes of Ice Cube, Ice-T and various other artists as they talk about their memories of the riots(covering the Rodney King beating, the verdict and escalation of events). Video footage of the fires, the beatings and
neighbourhoods being looted are interspliced with people talking about the background of Californian society twenty years ago to create a full picture. Well-made and full of strong moments, this film poses questions about whether anything has changed in the intervening years, and if another large-scale disturbance could happen again.

We'll be joined on the night by Dr. Justin A. Williams, Lecturer in Music at University of Bristol, an expert on West Coast hip hop, and as a special bonus treat we'll be screening a 16mm version of 'The Misuse of Force', an American police training film from 1978.
