(Eugene Jarecki / 2012 / USA / 108 minutes)
2012 was an historic year for drug policy reform, with two US states voting to legalize cannabis and a host of eminent public figures - including
incumbent presidents - declaring that the war on drugs has been lost.
Following on from his excellent "Why We Fight", about the increasing influence of the industrial-military complex in America, director Eugene Jarecki undertakes an equally perceptive and thorough enquiry into the decades-long "War On Drugs". From the dealer to the narcotics officer, the inmate to the federal judge, this is a penetrating look inside America's criminal justice system, revealing the profound human rights implications of U.S. drug policy.
Through the film and discussion we will examine how the war on drugs has failed to curb the supply and use of drugs and created a host of unintended negative costs. Danny Kushlick and John Moore will then discuss alternatives to the prohibitionist status quo and ways to create a more just and
effective drug policy.
Danny Kushlick - Head of External Affairs - Transform Drug Policy Foundation Danny founded Transform Drug Policy Foundation in 1997, after working in a variety of jobs in the drugs field. He is now an internationally recognised commentator on drug and drug policy issues.
Dr John Moore - Lecturer in Criminology UWE
John is a long term prison abolitionist and campaigner for drug policy reform. He is currently a lecturer at UWE in the Department of Sociology and Criminology
