(Florian Habicht / 2011 / NZ / 92 minutes / Certificate TBC)
This year we celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi with the genius that is Florian Habicht's Love Story, possibly the coolest romantic comedy documentary of all time. Made up as its participants go along, and assisted by the inhabitants of the city in which it's set, the film begins with Florian on the subway, falling for a mysterious woman carrying a piece of cake. He then hits the streets of New York to ask complete strangers how the story should unfold - belly dancers at Coney Island, a homeless dwarf, a stockbroker, punks, drunks and a mechanic in New York City all contribute to the tale, with Florian's father providing enthusiastic feedback on artistic choices and romantic strategies via a series of Skype calls from NZ. This imaginative approach to storytelling proves utterly enchanting and uproariously funny; the film becomes as much a valentine to New Yorkers in all their crazy, winning weirdness as it is a paean to love.
