To the uninitiated, the film is about the relationship between a morbidly depressed teenager and a vivacious older woman approaching her 80th birthday. Having found each other, they set out on a dizzying odyssey of thrills, spills and spiritual nourishment. With a soundtrack by Yusuf 'Cat Stevens' Islam and a host of eccentric characters, there is almost limitless pleasure to be found in their adventure together. A wise and wonderful picture which has had a seemingly profound influence on, among others, Wes Anderson.
