This award-winning film is a twist on the conventional love story, following the romance between an irresponsible single father and a killer whale trainer. Sullen Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts) is unemployed and has taken his five-year-old son to live with his sister while he dabbles with a succession of odd jobs and shady endeavours. While working as a bouncer at a club, Ali rescues Stephanie (Marion Cotillard) from a brawl and takes her home. Though nothing initially happens between them, Stephanie later turns to Ali after a tragic accident leaves her severely disabled. They slowly begin to establish a connection that is ultimately tested by her vulnerability and his emotional unavailability.

Rust and Bone is another intense and emotive treat from director Jacques Audiard. Though usually known more for crime than romance, he is a master of bringing anti-heroes facing tough adversity to the screen, and this is no exception.
