The Cube's mini music on film festival ends with a rare Ken Russell double bill to mark his recent death. First up is Mahler (1974). Less a conventional biopic than a poetic and sometimes surreal imagining of the relationship between the life and art of conductor Gustav Mahler this is arguably one of his finest films. Beginning with a train journey taken by Gustav [Robert Powell] and his wife Alma [Georgina Hale] as they try to rescue their failing marriage this takes in via a series of flashbacks, his childhood, the suicide of his brother and death of his young daughter and his own religious conversion from Judaism to Catholicism. This will be followed by a late evening screening of another Russell celluloid riff on classical music which may or may not contain dancing male appendages.
