(Woody Allen /1975 / West Germany / 85 minutes / Certificate PG)
December’s film as chosen by 20th Century Cube is Woody Allen’s ‘Love and Death’. At once a broad satire on the greats of Russian literature and an intellectual travelogue through western philosophy; it is also imbued with a beautiful
melancholy which will be pleasantly familiar to those intimate with Allen’s work. Using a heady mix of pastiche, slapstick and Bergmanesque cinematography (and "wheat... fields of wheat"!), it is both one of Allen’s more overlooked movies, and one of his most accomplished. To those who think Woody’s appeal lies solely in the humour of his writing, this is a chance to see just how visually rich his films can be: on a big screen, in a dark room with strangers.
