“In a million years, when kids go to school, they gonna know: Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in The Bathtub.”

Six-year-old Hushpuppy lives in an isolated and impoverished bayou community with her volatile, alcoholic father Wink. The Bathtub owes its name to its location below the levee in Louisiana, where it faces a constant, imminent risk of flooding. When the devastating storm Hushpuppy has been waiting for arrives, her community is destroyed and her father’s health continues to decline as he fights for their survival. Hushpuppy is left to retreat into her imagination, where her father’s illness and the flood are both linked to global warming. Then she decides to search for her long-lost mother who “swam away”.

This is an eccentric and moving gem boasting some stunning performances, particularly from Quvenzhané Wallis who plays the courageous Hushpuppy. It is a rare, memorable film which is not always easy to explain or categorise, however its aesthetics and tenderness will haunt you beyond the credits.
