Following the same footpaths that the hugely successful The Lives Of Others trod in 2006 Barbara tells a story of paranoia and fear felt in the former GDR, Eastern Germany. Barbara, which received an official selection at this year's Berlinale Film Festival and directed by Berlin School director Christian Petzold, best known for his psychodramas, tells the story of well respected doctor Barbara (Nina Hoss) who is sent to a rural GDR outpost. Her punishment for asking for a visa to exit the GDR? Barbara is monitored by the East German secret police, the Stasi, whilst attracting romantic attention from her chief doctor or possible spy, while still maintaining a relationship with her West German lover. Paranoia is unsurprisingly interwoven throughout this film, perhaps a precursor to the paranoia experience felt by this day and age's internet generation.
