Our friends at 20th Century Flicks have chosen another gem. Best known for his work at Ealing Studios, Alexander Mackendrick crossed the pond to make his masterpiece. With his honed blackly comic cynicism and a script tailored by Clifford Odets, he takes us on trawl through the vicious underbelly of urban existence. Burt Lancaster plays the despotic columnist whose maniacal desire for control leads him to befriend an ambitious press agent, played by "the boy with the ice-cream face" Tony Curtis. Shot almost entirely at night in 1950s New York it's marvel of neon and dark shadows, a place where 'dears' become daggers, with dialogue that will stay in your brain forever.
