Juno writer Diablo Cody has been brave enough to create a unsympathetic lead character in this darkly comic tale. Charlize Theron is Mavis Gary, a writer experiencing a mid-life crisis who returns to the small hometown she hates to try and win back an old flame. The fact that he is married with a young child doesn't seem to register but her delusions are brought home by another high-school friend who becomes a drinking buddy. He remembers her as the prom queen. She barely remembers him at all, but a poignant friendship develops between them. A sharp and well played character study that is refreshingly unsentimental.
