LEAFCUTTER JOHN
Yorkshire-cum-London lad John Burton has graced the planet with his remarkable contributions to electronic, folk and experimental music since his primary explorations with an old computer, originally bought to write his art school dissertation in 1998. Since then he has released five critically acclaimed albums which combine elements of musique concrète and electroacoustic music with voice and guitar work more commonly found in folk music. He has performed his award-winning work extensively throughout Europe and Australasia and has performed on BBC television and radio.
John has written several pioneering animated graphic score pieces including works for the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Currently John is composing music for a new production by Handspring, the pioneering puppetry company responsible for Warhorse, which ran at the National Theatre before going on to the West End and Broadway. 'Crow' combines puppetry, dance, and music. It is based on the Crow poems by Ted Hughes and will premiere at the 2012 London festival in May.
John is also a full-time member of the Mercury Prize-nominated contemporary jazz band Polar Bear, providing electronics, guitar, and vocals, and collaborates with the band's founder Sebastian Rochford in the duo project Nails. John's other duo project includes one with the accomplished tabla player Talvin Singh (tabla / voice and electronics / guitar / voice).
For the show tonight, John will be joined intermittently by Serafina Steer.

Skjølbrot is the solo project of D. Bennett (Hunting Lodge), working with electronics, field recordings and acoustic instruments. On record the results are a "a deeply engrossing and peculiar soundworld" (Boomkat), atmospheric, dense and highly textured, whereas live performances have become increasingly pared down and exploratory, focusing on Iannis Xenakis' Gendy synthesis algorithms. Tonight is a very special performance, as Bennett will be playing with acclaimed improvising double bassist and composer Dominic Lash. Also joining him on stage will be superb manipulator of tape/electronics Stuart Chalmers.
